Are We Beating Cancer?

Are We Beating Cancer?

Over the past two decades cancer survival rates have gone up. From being around 34% to around 45%. Although more people are having cancer these days due to alcohol, smoking, and being over weight. People that have habits like this are more likely to have cancer rather than people who don't drink, smoke or are over weight. These cancers such as oesophageal and pancreatice have  very low survival rates. Over the past 20 years around 520,000 lives have been saved due to research.

I think it's amazing how we are being able to help solve cancer. It has taken many, many years of research and practice, but we are getting there. Some are still very hard to solve and are very hard to detect at the early stages. I'm sure it's very long and very hard work to do this kind of job. If only we could some how come up with something to detect all cancers. But only the future can tell what happens I guess.

Company denies drug to dying child

Company denies drug to dying child

Josh Hardy is currently in critical condition.

In the article I read, it talks about how a family's boy is dying and is need of help. The only thing they have been able to find is an experimental drug, which is a drug that they are still studying and the FDA have not approved of yet. But this company which is a pharmaceutical companies and they often say no. They did say no to Josh when his parents asked for help. The family then turned to social media such as: Facebook and Twitter. People have been joining together and fighting for Josh to get the drug. Some people are taking it a little far by posting the e-mail addresses of the company's board members. By this, people are sending threats to them demanding for them to help out Josh. The company says they won't help Josh because it will slow down their process of finding the exact way to produce the drug. "The company would have to dish out $50,000 per compassionate-use patient, since insurance doesn't usually pay for experimental drugs," Moch said.

I think I can understand both parts of the fight. If Josh was my child I would fight my heart out to save his life. He is my own child and I would spend anything on him to keep him alive. But, also for the company's point of view I would try and stay focused on finishing the drug. Saving one kid is great, but having the ability to possible save thousands upon thousands would be so much better. I would feel really bad for not helping the kid out, but would still try to keep my eyes on the final goal.

This event does not really affect me. I don't know anyone that has ever been in this position. I don't even think I could be able to survive if I knew there was something out there that could help, but they wouldn't do anything. I would end up being the person sending threats to the company to help. Just saying...

OMG! Your teen actually talks to you?

Parents Just Don't Understand

Parents just don't understand their kids sometimes. They won't us to tell them our problems, but then we get yelled at for some thing's we did in the problem. Although there are some parents out there who have figured out how to get their kids to tell them anything. They can talk about any subject with their kids and help them out with it. Another thing they might have to do is "put duck tape over your mouth." Meaning that sometimes your kids will tell you stuff you don't want to hear but you still have to help them anyways. They might have to hold their tongue at times, but it helps their kids in the long run. One mom said, "If your teen thinks, I already know what my mom will say about this, so I'm not even going to talk to her," you can forget about your kids opening up to you.

I feel like it's great parents are finding ways to get their kids to be more open with them. I know I have had problems in my life but never wanted to go ask for help because of stuff I did that I knew I would get in trouble for. I think if my parents where more like these parents I could feel like I trust them more and could be more open with them. The only problem is, I know it won't happen.

What is the impact of using quotes?
The impact of using quotes is showing the actually words coming from the sources mouth. It shows you the "front line" instead me just telling you what I think all of this means. Using quotes help give more information about the topic and more detail.

Kansas teen uses 3-D printer to make hand for boy

Mason Wilde, 16, has been building things since he was little. He put his skills to good use by using the Johnson County Library’s 3-D printer to craft a prosthetic hand for 9-year-old Matthew, who was born with only a thumb on his right hand.

Read more here: http://www.kansas.com/2014/01/31/3261314/kansas-teen-uses-3-d-printer-to.html#storylink=cpy
In this article it talks about a Kansas teen building a prostatic hand for a little boy. The hand was created using a 3-D printer at his local library. If they did surgery for the boy it would have cost around 18,000 dollars to do. But it only cost 60 dollars to build and make as cool as the boy wanted it to be. This hand has changed has life in so many ways. His mom thought his self-confidence would be wrecked because of kids making fun of him. But now with his new hand kids are making him feel normal.

I'm so happy that this kid was able to get a hand of his own. I have not had anything like this happen to me but I can see it being very difficult. If it wasn't for someone who actually cared about people this kids life might have never changed. They need to start doing this for every person that's a prostatic. Its much cheaper and faster to do.

What is the central idea of the passage and how is it developed and refined throughout the selection?
The idea of this passage is a teenager builds a robot hand for a little boy. It starts out talking about how he is very good at taking stuff apart and putting them back together again. Then later on it talks about how he got the ideas and how he built the hand at his local library.

Justin Bieber's downward spiral: What to tell the kids?

File:Justin Bieber mugshot, front.jpgIn this article it talks about how even though Justin drank and drive and we should look at this and see that even celebrities are people too. We shouldn't look to this as a problem but as an example of why we shouldn't do this. It also says, "It is important to remind our kids that our mistakes do not define us," said Melissa Atkins Wardy.

I agree with what Melissa said about how our mistakes do not define us. I might live a great perfect life but everyone is going to mess up sometime in their life. We can't help it, its just human mistakes. I remember when Justin Bieber came out and I thought it was a girl. But he seemed to have an okay reputation and then this one screw up. I'm not saying its okay what he did but I'm not saying I hate him for making a mistake. This doesn't affect me that much because I don't look at celebrities as role models. So I just see this as something that could show everyone that "the poplar's" are just like me and you.

CNN analysis: Some college athletes play like adults, read like 5th-graders

photoIn this article it talks about how some college basketball players from UNC could only read and write on a 5th grade level. At Chapel Hill there are approximately 183 "athletes who played football or basketball from 2004 to 2012. She found that 60% read between fourth- and eighth-grade levels." Some of the payers also only tried hard enough to get a passing grade to join the NCAA. Ever since 1980 players have been coming forward admitting they never learned to read and still made it to the pros. This really does surprise me that people are making it to UNC without even knowing how to read on a middle school level. Even though this is my favorite college basketball team it kind of scares me to know there not as smart as I thought they were. I would always wonder how they could keep up with basketball and school? But after reading that some of them get passing grades on classes they don't attend makes some since. This event does not really affect me because I don't plan on going to college for sports. So I don't need to be worried about everything that is going on. The central idea of this article is how some players don't read and write on a college level.

Playing Music Makes You Want To Shop

In this article it talks about how stores are trying to use music to bring people in to buy more and to stay longer. They have to pick songs that everyone will like and not songs that keep some customers in and drive some of them away. They also pick songs that go good with the season and what they sell in the stores. If they put to much holiday music in, it could drive customers away from hearing it so many times.

File:Levi's store Shinjuku.jpg
How I feel about this is its a good selling strategy but it sounds kind of hard because everyone has there own kind of taste in music. Maybe older people don't like the newer songs out these days or maybe the kids like the newest song yet and hate old ones. Finding a specific song that will keep the most people in seems hard to me. But it does not really affect my life because I don't go shopping that often. I'm the kind who saves his money for important stuff and not waste it on stuff I don't really need.

What is the purpose for using quotations?

Using quotations helps the reader understand more about what's going on. Using quotes helps support an idea or helps encourage people to pull for that persons argument.
